Back to School Prep & Reminders by Shaquana Smith

As the summer days begin to wane, parents and children are filled with a mix of excitement and anticipation for the new school year. The start of a new academic year is not just a transition from vacation to routine but a gateway to new opportunities, challenges, and growth. Here’s how you can embrace this fresh start and make the most of the upcoming school year.

Setting the Tone for Success

  1. Establishing Goals:

  • For Students: Setting academic and personal goals at the beginning of the school year can provide direction and motivation. Whether it’s aiming for higher grades, joining a new club, or making new friends, having clear objectives helps in maintaining focus.

  • For Parents: Supporting your child in setting realistic and achievable goals can foster a sense of responsibility and independence. Encourage open conversations about their aspirations and how you can help them achieve these goals.

  1. Organizing and Planning:

  • Creating a Schedule: A well-structured schedule is crucial for balancing academics, extracurricular activities, and personal time. Utilize planners or digital tools to keep track of assignments, tests, and important dates from day one; make it a habit.

  • Workspace Setup: A dedicated, organized workspace at home can significantly enhance productivity. Ensure that it is free from distractions and stocked with necessary supplies.

Embracing New Learning Opportunities

  1. Exploring New Learning Styles:

  • The new school year often brings new subjects and electives along with an increase in workload for some. Encourage the use of various learning styles (aka studying techniques).

  1. Adapting to New Teaching Methods:

  • The educational landscape is constantly evolving, with new teaching methods and technologies being introduced. Be open to these changes and embrace new ways of learning, whether it’s through online resources (YouTube: Crash Course) or interactive tools.

Building a Positive Mindset

  1. Fostering Resilience:

  • Challenges and setbacks are inevitable. Developing a resilient mindset helps in overcoming obstacles and turning failures into learning experiences.

  • Encourage a growth mindset by focusing on effort and progress rather than just outcomes.

  1. Prioritizing Well-being:

  • A healthy mind and body are essential for academic success. Ensure a balanced diet, regular exercise or movement, and adequate sleep.

  1. Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hrs

  2. PreSchool (3-5 years): 10-13 hrs

  3. School-age (6-13 years): 9-12 hrs

  4. Teens (14-17 years): 8-10 hrs

Strengthening Community and Relationships

  1. Building Strong Relationships:

  • Positive relationships with teachers, peers, and parents create a supportive network that enhances the educational experience.

  • Engage in school activities and community events to build connections and foster a sense of belonging.

  1. Effective Communication:

  • Open and effective communication between students, parents, and teachers is key to addressing concerns and celebrating achievements.

  • Regularly check in with each other to stay informed and involved in the educational journey.

The start of a new school year is a time filled with promise and potential. Let’s approach this new beginning with optimism and a readiness to learn, grow, and thrive!

I will be hosting a virtual children's group and will assist them in understanding how to set goals, how to prioritize their well-being, and how to communicate effectively in the school setting all while building therapeutic relationships so that students can navigate this transition successfully.

Group sessions will take place in September 2024, weekly for 4 weeks.
